Apply for a temporary driving licence

You can apply for a temporary driving licence if you have applied for the renewal of your expired licence or have lost your drivers licence.

This licence is valid for only six months and can be issued at any driving licence testing centre (DLTC).

What you should do

Go to the nearest driving licence testing centre with the following:
- Certified copy of your identity document (ID) or temporary ID
- Proof of postal and residential address e.g. utility account. If the utility bill is not in your name, the owner of the bill must make an affidavit declaring that you live at the address and the utility bill must be attached to the affidavit.
- If you stay at an informal settlement, you must bring a letter with an official date stamp from the ward councillor confirming your postal and residential address
- Four identical black-and-white photographs. You must first confirm with the DLTC how many photos they require before you have photos taken.
- The prescribed fee.

Complete the Application for a driving licence (DL1) form.
Complete the notification of change of address or particulars of person or organisation (NCP) form.
You will undergo an eye test at the testing centre or you can have an eye test done by qualified optometrist and submit the form at the testing centre.

The temporary driving licence is issued on the same day.
